Leading with Health

Aug 26, 2019

What is the future of healthcare tech? Will healthcare technology help us connect with ourselves and one another, or will it foster more disconnection? In this episode, I explore the complexities of nascent healthcare technology. Here are the resources I mention:

Highlights include:

2:00 – Sensorized prosthetics

4:00 – Apple watch detects atrial fibrillation

5:50 – Could tech be making it a little too easy to disconnect from our own selves, from our own bodies?

6:20 – Are we getting trained to think somebody else will tell us when we’ve overdone it or when we aren’t walking enough?

6:50 – We still need a cultural value where we honor the wealth of information that we carry along inside us.

8:30 – Just coming into my own at age 50

10:00 – Stats on how many older people are online and using social media

10:34 – Disabilities are less about the person and more about the environment. It’s more that the environment that’s disabled because it’s not allowing that person to have the tools they need.

11:35 – Robotic exoskeletons would be awesome.

12:45 – “Virtual health technology is not scalable by nature.” Next-gen telehealth: AI, chatbots, genomics and sensors that advance population health

14:00 – “To truly reach scalability, certain functions of virtual healthcare must be decomposed and outsourced back to the patient, he added. Therefore, one needs automation, and systems that are led by the patient, but where the value is driven by, for example, chatbots.” Next-gen telehealth: AI, chatbots, genomics and sensors that advance population health

20:10 – I’m always trying to think about that balance, about where we can go with technology and not erase the soul of being human which is, to me, about connection.
